Used DSG inspection checklist
Start with the service history and confirm which transmission is fitted. Test the vehicle cold and again fully warm. Check take-off from a stop, reverse engagement, light-throttle shifts, kickdown and steady-speed driving. Listen for abnormal mechanical noise and look for transmission-fluid leaks.
Scan before you buy
A full vehicle scan can reveal stored or intermittent transmission faults even when no warning is currently shown. Measured clutch and adaptation values can add useful context on applicable gearboxes.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the DSG been serviced at the correct interval for this gearbox?
- Has a clutch or mechatronic previously been replaced?
- Is the vehicle tuned?
- Has it ever shown a transmission warning?
- Does the fault change when hot?
A pre-purchase inspection cannot guarantee future reliability, but it can identify warning signs and poor maintenance before money changes hands.
