DSG PRNDS / Gearbox Warning Light

What to do when the DSG PRNDS display flashes or a transmission warning appears, including safe next steps and common diagnostic checks.

What a flashing PRNDS display means

On applicable Volkswagen Group vehicles, a flashing gear display or transmission warning indicates that the transmission controller has logged a fault serious enough to alert the driver. The gearbox may enter a protection strategy or lose certain gears.

Can you keep driving?

If the vehicle has lost drive, engages gears harshly, makes abnormal mechanical noise or displays a serious gearbox warning, continuing to drive can worsen damage. Arrange recovery if safe operation is uncertain. If it still drives normally, avoid unnecessary load and arrange diagnosis promptly.

Do not clear the codes first

Fault-code frequency, freeze-frame data and operating conditions can help locate intermittent faults. Clearing codes before diagnosis can remove useful information.
